Component Details & Selection Guide

📱 Tablets

✅ RECOMMENDED Apple iPad 10.2" (9th Gen) - $329

The perfect balance of performance and cost for most courses. Excellent screen visibility, reliable software updates.

Pros: Best value, proven reliability, great support
Cons: Not waterproof (needs weatherproof enclosure)
Apple iPad Air - $599

Upgrade option with larger screen, faster processor, better outdoor visibility.

Best for: High-end courses, premium experience

Apple iPad Mini - $499

Compact option, easier to mount, still full iPad functionality.

Best for: Space-constrained locations, par-3 courses

WiFi vs. Cellular: Start with WiFi models. Add cellular ($130 extra per tablet) only if you have WiFi dead zones or want maximum reliability. Most courses find WiFi sufficient.

🔒 Tablet Mounts & Enclosures

Maclocks Rokku Enclosure - $179 PREMIUM

Weather-resistant, tamper-proof, wall or pole mount options.

Features: Cable management, secure locking, professional appearance
ArmorActive ProEnclosure - $149 POPULAR

IP65 rated, outdoor certified, excellent value.

Features: Waterproof, charging port access, multiple mounting options
CTA Digital Wall Mount - $89 BUDGET

Basic security, good for indoor/covered areas.

Best for: Covered tee boxes, indoor kiosks

Important: Don't cheap out on mounts. A $50 mount failing can mean a $500 stolen/damaged iPad. Invest in quality enclosures with proper locks.

📺 Leaderboard Displays

SunBrite Veranda 43" - $1,299

Purpose-built outdoor TV, 700 nits brightness, weather-sealed.

Best for: Outdoor club house displays, patio areas

Indoor Display (Samsung/TCL) - $279-399

Standard smart TV works great indoors—bar, pro shop, tournament room.

Setup: Just navigate to your leaderboard URL, set to full screen, done!

Pro Tip: Use a cheap Amazon Fire Stick ($30) to display leaderboards on existing TVs. No computer needed!

📡 Networking Equipment

Ubiquiti UniFi AP - $149 each

Professional-grade outdoor access point, 500ft+ coverage, centrally managed.

Coverage: 2-3 APs typically cover 18 holes
Power: PoE (power over ethernet)—one cable does it all

TP-Link Omada - $89 each

Budget-friendly alternative, still delivers 300ft+ coverage.

Best for: Smaller courses, tighter budgets

Network Design Quick Guide
  • Small course (9 holes): 1-2 access points
  • Standard 18 holes: 2-3 access points strategically placed
  • Hilly/wooded course: 4-5 access points may be needed
  • Rule of thumb: One AP every 6-8 holes, centrally located

📡 Network Setup & Testing

Your network is the backbone of Stationary Mode. Let's get it right.

1

Survey Your Course

Before installing anything, map out where you have (and don't have) coverage.

Tools You'll Need:

  • • Your smartphone (any will work)
  • • WiFi analyzer app (free): "WiFi Analyzer" (Android) or "AirPort Utility" (iPhone)
  • • Notepad or mapping app to record signal strength

How to test: Walk to each hole, connect to WiFi, note signal strength. You want at least 3 bars (or -70 dBm or better). Mark any problem areas on a course map.

2

Plan Access Point Placement

Strategic placement is everything. One well-placed AP beats two poorly-placed ones.

✅ Good Locations:

  • • Maintenance buildings (central, powered, secure)
  • • Halfway house (midpoint coverage is ideal)
  • • Tall light poles or structures (height = range)
  • • Club house exterior walls

❌ Avoid:

  • • Dense tree cover (signals don't penetrate well)
  • • Valleys/low areas (signals travel better from height)
  • • Behind metal structures
  • • Areas with no power access
Sample Layout for 18-Hole Course:
AP #1: Club House (covers holes 1, 9, 10, 18)
AP #2: Hole 5 area - maintenance shed (covers holes 3-7)
AP #3: Hole 14 area - light pole (covers holes 12-16)
3

Install & Configure Access Points

Most modern APs use PoE (Power over Ethernet), making installation clean and simple.

Installation Steps:

  1. Run ethernet cable from your router/switch to AP location
  2. Connect AP to PoE injector or PoE switch
  3. Mount AP (usually on wall or pole using included bracket)
  4. Power on and wait for LED to turn solid (2-3 minutes)
  5. Configure via manufacturer's app or web interface

Recommended Settings:

  • SSID: "[YourCourseName] Player WiFi" (make it obvious)
  • Security: WPA2 or WPA3 with simple password
  • Channel: Auto (let APs coordinate to avoid interference)
  • Power: Medium or Auto (max power can cause issues)
  • Guest Network: Enable for players, isolate from course systems
4

Test Coverage Thoroughly

Don't skip this step! Test every single tablet location before final installation.

Testing Checklist:

Walk Test: Walk from hole to hole, verify no dead zones
Speed Test: Run speedtest.net at each hole (need 3+ Mbps minimum)
Load Test: Connect 5+ devices simultaneously, verify performance
Weather Test: Test on rainy day (signals can weaken in rain)

Troubleshooting Weak Spots: If you find dead zones, add another AP, use a WiFi extender, or consider cellular backup iPads for those specific holes.

⚠️

Security Important!

Use a separate guest network for players. Don't put course tablets on the same network as your tee time system, security cameras, or office computers. Keep player devices isolated.

📱 Tablet Configuration & Mounting

Setting up your iPads correctly ensures years of reliable operation.

Initial iPad Setup

1. Create a Course Apple ID

Don't use personal Apple IDs. Create one specifically for the course.

Email: [email protected]
Password: [something secure and documented]
Recovery: Pro shop phone number

2. Basic iPad Settings

  • Display & Brightness: Auto-Brightness ON, True Tone ON
  • Auto-Lock: Never (we want screens always on)
  • Notifications: Turn OFF all notifications
  • Siri: Disable (prevents accidental activation)
  • Software Update: Manual updates only (control when updates happen)

3. Enable Guided Access (Kiosk Mode)

This locks the iPad to PuttScores so players can't exit to other apps.

Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access → Toggle ON

Set a Passcode → [create 6-digit pin]

Display Auto-Lock → Never

💡 To enable: Triple-click side button when in PuttScores

💡 To exit: Triple-click side button, enter passcode

4. Connect to WiFi

Connect to your course WiFi network. Make sure "Auto-Join" is enabled so tablets reconnect after power outages.

5. Open Safari & Navigate to PuttScores

1. Open Safari browser

2. Go to: puttscores.com/dashboard

3. Login to your course account

4. Navigate to Stationary Mode settings

5. You'll get a unique URL for each hole

6. Tap "Add to Home Screen" → Name it "Hole 1" (or whatever hole)

7. Now you have a one-tap app icon that opens directly to that hole

6. Enable Guided Access for PuttScores

Open the PuttScores home screen icon, triple-click the side button, tap "Start" at top right.

✨ Done! The iPad is now locked to PuttScores and players cannot exit.

Physical Mounting

1

Choose Mounting Location

Good: Near tee box, visible from cart path, 4-5 ft height

Good: Shaded when possible (reduces glare & heat)

Good: Accessible to all players (including those with mobility issues)

Avoid: Direct sun all day (screen becomes unreadable)

Avoid: Hidden behind trees or structures

Avoid: Areas prone to golf ball strikes

2

Install Mount Hardware

Wall Mount: Use lag bolts into studs or concrete anchors. Make sure it's SECURE—these tablets will face wind, rain, and curious hands.

Pole Mount: Use stainless steel clamps, tighten firmly. Check tightness weekly for first month.

Pro Tip: Slightly angle tablets downward (10-15°) to reduce sun glare and make screen more readable.

3

Power Connection

If outlet nearby: Run power cable through conduit (for protection), plug in.

If no outlet: Consider solar+battery kiosks (more expensive but eliminates wiring).

Important: Use weather-rated outdoor power cables. Secure cables so players can't trip over them. Consider burying power lines if running across cart paths.

4

Final Checks

Mount is secure, doesn't wobble
Tablet is charging (check charging indicator)
WiFi connected and strong signal
PuttScores loads correctly for this hole
Guided Access enabled (try to exit—shouldn't work)
Screen readable in current lighting conditions
Enclosure is locked with key stored securely

Don't Forget to Label!

Put a small label on the back of each mount: "Hole 5 Tablet" + emergency contact number. Helps maintenance staff and makes troubleshooting easier.

⚙️ Software Configuration in Dashboard

Configure Stationary Mode settings in your PuttScores dashboard.

1

Enable Stationary Mode

Login to puttscores.com/dashboard → Navigate to Settings → Stationary Mode section

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How much does hardware cost?

Budget setup (9 holes): ~$2,000

Standard 18-hole setup: $8,000-12,000

Premium outdoor setup: $15,000-20,000

This is a one-time investment. No monthly hardware fees.

Do I need tablets at EVERY hole?

No! Many courses start with tablets at:

  • • Hole 1 (check-in)
  • • Hole 10 (make the turn)
  • • Every 3rd hole after that (4, 7, 13, 16)

This works fine. Full 18-hole coverage is ideal but not required to start.

What if it rains?

iPads themselves aren't waterproof, but weatherproof enclosures (like ArmorActive) are IP65-rated—they handle rain, snow, dust, etc. Touchscreens work even with water droplets on them.

What about theft/vandalism?

Security enclosures lock with keys. Tablets are screwed into mounts. In 5+ years across hundreds of courses, theft is extremely rare. The enclosures make it obvious the tablets are secured, discouraging attempts.

Many courses add small signs: "Surveillance camera" or "GPS tracked" for extra deterrent.

How long do iPads last in outdoor conditions?

With proper weatherproof enclosures, iPads easily last 3-5 years outdoors. We've seen courses run tablets for 5+ years without issues.

Main factors: quality enclosures, keeping them charged, annual cleaning/maintenance.

Do players need to download an app?

No! That's the beauty of Stationary Mode. Players just walk up to tablets and use them. No downloads, no accounts, no login. Just tap and play.

What if WiFi goes down?

Tablets will cache scores temporarily and sync when connection returns. For critical reliability, use cellular-enabled iPads as backup—they'll use cell data if WiFi fails.

Realistically, WiFi outages are rare and brief. Have paper scorecards as ultimate backup.

Can we use Android tablets instead of iPads?

Yes, PuttScores works on any modern tablet. However, we strongly recommend iPads because:

  • • Better outdoor screen visibility
  • • More reliable software updates
  • • Better enclosure/mount options available
  • • Superior long-term durability

If budget is tight, Samsung Galaxy Tab A series is acceptable.

How do we handle slow/tech-resistant players?

Keep paper scorecards available for first few weeks. Most players adapt within 1-2 rounds once they see how easy it is.

Rangers can help on the course. Pro shop staff can demo at check-in. Put simple instructions on signs near tablets.

After 1 month, 95%+ of players prefer tablets over paper.

Can we show ads/sponsors on tablets?

Yes! PuttScores has built-in sponsorship display options. Show sponsor logos, ads, or course info on scoring screens. Great revenue opportunity!

What's the ROI on this investment?

Cost savings:

  • • Eliminate paper scorecard printing (~$500-1000/year)
  • • Eliminate pencil purchases (~$200/year)
  • • Reduce ranger time managing pace (hard to quantify but significant)

Revenue increases:

  • • Sponsorship revenue ($2,000-10,000/year depending on course size)
  • • Better pace of play = more rounds per day
  • • Enhanced player experience = better reviews = more bookings

Typical payback period: 2-3 years

Do we need cellular data plans for tablets?

Not if you have good WiFi coverage. Start with WiFi-only models.

Add cellular (~$10-15/month per tablet) only if:

  • • WiFi dead zones you can't fix
  • • Want bulletproof reliability for tournaments
  • • Course is very spread out / challenging to cover with WiFi
Can we track which groups are taking selfies?

Yes! If you add selfie stations (camera + backdrop), you can see in the dashboard which groups took photos, and download/share them. Great for marketing!

⭐ Best Practices & Pro Tips

Lessons learned from hundreds of successful implementations.

🚀 Deployment Strategy

✅ Do: Soft Launch First

Start with a 1-2 week "beta" period. Invite regular players to try it. Get feedback. Fix issues. THEN do full rollout. This catches problems early before your busiest days.

✅ Do: Over-Communicate

Email members 2 weeks ahead. Put signs at pro shop. Have staff mention it at check-in. Post on social media. The more you tell people, the smoother the transition.

❌ Don't: Launch on Championship Day

Don't debut new tech during your biggest tournament. Launch on slower weekdays first, then weekends, THEN special events once you're confident.

🔧 Daily Operations

Morning Routine

  • • Check all tablets are powered on and charging
  • • Verify WiFi is working (spot-check a few holes)
  • • Quick clean of screens (microfiber cloth)
  • • Check Ranger Portal is accessible
  • Time: 10-15 minutes

Evening Routine

  • • Review day's scores for any anomalies
  • • Check pace of play reports—identify problem spots
  • • Note any tablets that need attention (screen cracks, not charging, etc.)
  • Time: 5-10 minutes

Weekly Maintenance

  • • Deep clean all screens
  • • Check mount tightness (screws can loosen over time)
  • • Verify all enclosure locks are working
  • • Test WiFi speed at each hole
  • • Review and clear any saved photos/data if needed
  • Time: 30-45 minutes

👥 Staff Training

Pro Shop Staff Should Know:

  • • How to check groups in for Stationary Mode
  • • Basic tablet troubleshooting (restart, WiFi check)
  • • How to access Ranger Portal
  • • Who to call if something breaks

Rangers/Marshals Should Know:

  • • Full Ranger Portal functionality
  • • How to help players use tablets
  • • How to edit scores on behalf of groups
  • • Common troubleshooting steps
  • • How to manually advance/move groups in system

Maintenance Staff Should Know:

  • • How to clean tablets without damaging them
  • • How to check power connections
  • • Who to contact for technical issues
  • • NOT to spray water directly on tablets (even in enclosures)

Training Tip: Record a 5-minute video showing the basics. Much easier than explaining every time you hire someone new.

🎯 Enhancing Player Experience

Add Hole Information

Use the tablet screen to show: hole layout, yardage, pro tips, hole sponsor. Makes tablets more valuable than just scoring.

Create Photo Opportunities

Set up a selfie station at hole 18 or a scenic spot. Players share photos on social media = free marketing for your course.

Display Live Leaderboards

Put TV in clubhouse/bar showing live scoring. Players love seeing their names up there. Creates buzz and excitement.

Gamification Features

Enable closest-to-pin, longest drive, best score challenges. PuttScores can track these automatically. Adds fun competition.

💰 Monetization Opportunities

Hole Sponsorships

Sell "sponsored by" placements on tablets. Every player at that hole sees the sponsor's logo/message.

Typical pricing: $500-2,000 per hole per year

Food & Beverage Orders

Enable on-course ordering via tablets. "Order drinks delivered to hole 12" = increased F&B revenue + better player experience.

Premium Features

Offer "premium rounds" with extra features: professional photos, advanced stats, personalized highlights. Charge $5-10 extra per round.

Tournament Packages

Charge event organizers for enhanced tournament features: live scoring, instant results, photo packages, branded leaderboards.

Typical pricing: $100-500 per tournament

🏆 Keys to Long-Term Success

  • 1. Consistency is Key: Keep tablets working 100% of the time. One broken tablet = bad experience for multiple groups.
  • 2. Listen to Feedback: First month, actively ask players what they think. Make quick adjustments based on real usage.
  • 3. Celebrate Wins: When pace of play improves, tell your members! When you eliminate paper waste, promote it! Make Stationary Mode a point of pride.
  • 4. Keep Improving: PuttScores releases new features regularly. Stay updated, enable new capabilities, keep the experience fresh.
  • 5. Backup Everything: Always have spare tablets, backup paper cards, Plan B for tournaments. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
